Jonathan Espalin creates many-layered mixed media paintings and drawings celebrating the interweaving of nature and human civilization.  Images of nature such as plants, birds, and landscapes are combined with fragments of civilization including city maps, text, abstract patterns, and mechanical diagrams,  He uses a combination of hand crafts and digital media, enjoying the back and forth of organic and machine characters.  Wildness and order run into each other, and something new emerges from their collision. 

Jonathan moved to Olympia in 2024, after years of planning, and is deeply inspired by the combination of natural beauty and vibrant culture.  In addition to his artwork, he designs and builds gardens, another chance to meld nature and civilization, art and function.
