Fine Art & Textiles

I am a fiber artist and a painter. My first art class was during my junior year in college. The art professor really pushed you to get ideas and certainly increased my curiosity. Moving back to Sacramento I received my BA and MA in art and went to work. I started my teaching experience in high school, then middle and elementary. I retired from my high school teaching at River Ridge High School in Lacey.

Artist Statement

I primarily worked in clay and oils during this time. I created floral paintings, landscapes, portraits, and leaf paintings, water scenes. I am inspired by the impressionists and abstract artists of past and today. I continue to work in oils and my mixed media paintings. When I get curious about something, I will explore the idea and materials. In 2016 I began working with mixed media. The movement of the inks and how they combine and collide with each other is exciting. The addition of gold leaf and foils adds a bit of elegance, the jewelry so to speak. The abstract forms are simple and serene. Recently I am adding more color and layers for depth and cutting up some paintings and rearrang- ing into new works.

I also design fabric wall art. I have quilted for about 30 years . Each quilt/pillow is original, always a new design and colors. I shop in my studio for the fabric, where there are three tables filled with fabric according to color.

The sketch is then enlarged and pattern pieces are cut out. The fabric is pieced by machine. Hand quilting and beading is the part where they come alive for me. I have also cut up quilts and made designer pillows from those. During Covid I created new designs for pillows for the gallery and continue to do so.

Collaging came about with a lot of scraps left over from quilting. I have just created a new series of whimsical abstract like collages (fabric, inks, foils, papers) with figures, music themes, tricycles, dancing and more. They are really fun to create. My art brings me joy no matter what I create. I am fortunate to have a studio in my home to work in.
